The Montessori curriculum focuses on problem solving, independent research, and peer teaching, among other things. Montessori schools have been successfully educating children in the public sector for thirty years in school districts across the country. Many now offer kindergarten through eighth grade configurations.
Montessori middle-school curricula, like those in the lower grades, focus on the whole-child academic, developmental, and social skills. A critical success factor for adolescents is a strong, supportive environment; a sense of stability and order; and an environment that provides them with safe choices and supervised independence. Having a kindergarten through eighth grade program on a single campus allows for this continuity of the school environment. Children know what to expect and what is expected from them, and upper elementary and middle-school children serve as role models and mentors for younger children.
The North Shoreview Montessori Middle School expansion started as a grassroots effort from parents who were seeking a kindergarten through eighth grade Montessori education as well as a small middle-school environment for their children. The expansion has been a collaborative effort between Parkside Montessori and North Shoreview Montessori, with parents, teachers, and administrators integrally involved. Following approval by the SM-FC School Board, sixth grade was offered in 2008, followed by seventh grade in 2009 and eighth grade in 2010.
